Beneath our weather shelter you can see a box protecting the soil temperature gauge from direct solar radiation. The temperature tube rising into the weather shelter unit is insulated to avoid false readings. The soil temperature probe is set 20 mm into the ground. The probe consists of a platinum bulb.
Temperature recorded is indicated on a dial gauge within the weather shelter.
Our station has a second soil sensor located near our MetData1 automated station. To protect the sensor from damage, a small fence surrounds the area where it is buried. This second sensor is also buried to a depth of 20 mm. This sensor records soil temperature every 10 minutes. See our Current & 10-minute Data link.
